Cascia was home to St. Rita for all of her religious life

A remote town set in the Umbrian mountains, Cascia was home to St. Rita for all of her religious life. After her canonisation in 1900, a large shrine was built in Cascia, where the body of St. Rita can still be visited.
St. Rita was born in 1381 in the tiny village of Roccaporena, near Cascia. At the age of 36 she joined the Augustinian Order and gave herself wholeheartedly to prayer and works of charity. One day, when she was about 60 years of age, she was meditating before the image of the Crucifix when she received the stigmata. She suffered the pain for the next 15 years with dignity and passed away on May 22, 1457. St. Rita’s body, which has remained intact, is housed in the shrine at Cascia.

Norcia is famous for being the birthplace of Saint Benedict

Norcia is located on a valley in the Sabbine mountains of Umbria. Norcia had a great political importance in Roman times, being mentioned quite frequently by Roman historians, but it was during the Middle Ages when it became a prosperous town.
Norcia is famous for being the birthplace of Saint Benedict, founder of the Benedictine order. It is also famous for its restaurants and food shops; for its production of capocollo, sausages, salumi and hams made from wild boar and domestic swine that has given a word to the Italian language “norcineria”, that it’s, pork butcher’s shop.
